Will cutting up aluminum cans then grinding them to a fine powder create aluminum oxide?

I'm trying to make aluminum oxide for an at home experiment, will cutting and grinding soda cans make aluminum oxide. If not what other ways are there to make it?Will cutting up aluminum cans then grinding them to a fine powder create aluminum oxide?
You can dissolve aluminum in lye, dilute the result in a large amount of water, collect and dry the white solids, and then heat them to red hot to make aluminum oxide. Or buy some alumina abrasive or sandpaper. Will cutting up aluminum cans then grinding them to a fine powder create aluminum oxide?
Those cans are not pure aluminum. It's an alloy.

If you can accept some impurities, cutting the cans into thin strips,

and heating them over a gas flame will cause them to burn in air.

Be very careful. this is a very hot flame.

Be prepared to drop the 'ash' on a ceramic plate for cooling, %26amp; collection.

Note: That oxide may go to the hydroxide very quickly

by taking moisture out of the air.
