What does baking powder do in baking?

I am new to baking and bakery stuff, i was just wandering what does baking powder does when baking? because some recipe's says Baking powder, not yeast and tried making buns from those recipes and they don't work. What is the significance in baking powder when it comes to baking? will it make my bread even softer if i add them along with yeast?What does baking powder do in baking?
